OJO CALIENTE ("hot springs") is famous for its hot mineral springs
with temperatures ranging from 98-1130F. Enjoy massages, herbal wraps
and facial treatments.
2. EL RITO.
Just north of Ojo Caliente, turn west on NM 111, then west again on NM
554 to El Rito. Northern New Mexico Normal School was originally located
at El Rito. It is now a branch of Northern New Mexico Community College
offering classes in the traditional crafts of adobe construction, weaving,
furniture building and tin work as well as a range of college courses.
It is the site of Elderhostel Programs on Pueblo and Hispanic Culture.

3. MEDANALES. Follow NM 554 south to US 84, turn left to Medanales.
(This small village is located just north of the highway.) Medanales is
known as a center of weaving and wood-carving.
4. HERNANDEZ. US 84 continues south to the tiny village of Hernandez.
This town was made famous by Ansel Adams 1941 photograph, "Moonrise over
Hernandez." During the summer/fall months you’ll find roadside stands
filled with the Valley’s best locally grown fruits and vegetables. You’ll
also find all sizes of chile ristras, the favorite sign of welcome in
this warm and friendly area. Return to Española for a great meal in one
of the local restaurants.
